How to Grow Your Audience Even if You've Never Marketed Before

Starting a business is one thing, but growing your audience, especially when you've never marketed before, can feel like a whole new challenge. If you're a mom running a product-based business, juggling work and family life is already a handful. Add marketing into the mix, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the good news: You don’t need to be a marketing expert to build an engaged audience for your brand. With some simple yet effective strategies, you can grow your customer base, increase sales, and elevate your business without spending more time than you already have. Let’s dive into how you can start growing your audience today!

1. Know Your Niche

Before you dive into marketing strategies, it's crucial to define your niche. Who are your products for? What problems do they solve? Understanding who your ideal customer is will shape the way you approach your marketing. When you get clear on who you're serving, your marketing will speak directly to those people—and attract the right audience.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is my ideal customer? (Age, gender, lifestyle, interests)

  • What are their main pain points?

  • How does my product solve their problems or make their life better?

Once you've got this clarity, everything you create—from social media content to email marketing—will have more focus and attract the right people.

2. Create Content Pillars That Convert

Content is king when it comes to growing your audience, but creating random content won't help you much. Instead, establish 3-5 content pillars that align with your brand and provide value to your ideal customer. Content pillars are key themes or topics that you consistently create around. For a product-based business, these could include:

  • Product features and benefits

  • Behind-the-scenes (how your products are made)

  • Customer stories and testimonials

  • Educational content related to your products (e.g., “How to Use Eco-Friendly Baby Products”)

By building content around these pillars, you create a mix of education, entertainment, and promotional content that keeps your audience engaged while driving sales.

A customer journey, E-Commerce Funnel

Here is an example of Customer Journey. This is the journey that every customer goes through before taking Action and purchasing your product or service. And the % of time shows how much effort you need to put for every stage of the funnel to lead customers to purchase.

The most common mistake I observe in businesses: dedication of excessive time to generate "Awareness" and relentlessly creating social media content, only to face burnout and exhaustion because, truth be told, this approach often falls short.

3. Leverage Social Media Platforms That Fit Your Business

If you’re new to marketing, social media is one of the best places to start because it’s free and offers massive reach. But with so many platforms out there, it’s easy to spread yourself thin. Start with the platforms where your ideal customers are most active and focus on growing your audience there.

Here are some specific strategies for different platforms:

  • Instagram: Instagram is a powerhouse for product-based businesses. Use Reels to showcase your products and behind-the-scenes processes, carousels to share customer reviews, and Stories to engage with your audience in real time. You don’t even need to show your face—product demos, unboxing videos, and user-generated content can still build a strong following.

  • Pinterest: Perfect for product-based businesses, Pinterest allows you to share visually appealing pins that lead to your website or blog posts. Optimize your pins with keywords so your audience can find you easily.

  • YouTube: If you love explaining or demonstrating your products, YouTube can be a fantastic tool for growing an audience. Share tutorials, how-tos, or behind-the-scenes content about how your products can solve specific problems for your customers.

  • Threads: This platform makes it easy to engage with your ideal clients through conversations. By responding to their content and offering valuable insights, Threads' algorithm will boost your visibility, helping you reach more potential customers.

  • Blogs: Blogging is great for SEO and for providing helpful content. When you focus on topics that solve your customer’s problems, you’ll start to see organic traffic coming to your website.

  • Facebook Groups: Join or create niche Facebook Groups where your target audience hangs out. Provide value by answering questions, offering advice, and sharing useful content. Optimize your profile to lead people back to your store or website.

4. Get Creative with Collaborations and Partnerships

Collaborations are a great way to grow your audience by leveraging other people’s audiences. Partner with influencers, bloggers, or even other small businesses in your niche to cross-promote products or run giveaways. This helps you reach potential customers who may not have heard of your brand yet but are interested in what you offer.

5. Build an Email List and Nurture Relationships

One of the most effective ways to grow and nurture your audience is through email marketing. By offering valuable opt-ins—such as a discount code, freebie, or exclusive content—you can encourage website visitors to subscribe to your list. Once you’ve built your list, consistently send out emails with updates, product promotions, and educational content to keep your audience engaged.

6. Consistency is Key

When you’re just starting out with marketing, it can be tempting to post sporadically or try too many things at once. Consistency, however, is the real key to growth. Whether you're posting on Instagram or sending out emails, staying consistent will help you build trust with your audience. Pick a schedule you can stick to and commit to showing up regularly.
